SECONDARY SCHOOL CURRICULUM

Studying Climate Change, Health, and Adaptation

An introduction to climate change impacts, adaptation, complexity, and the COBWEB Simulation Platform

The material in this section contains a curriculum that uses COBWEB to introduce students to the linkages between climate change and health and the concept of adaptation. The curriculum has been developed by the Adaptation & Impacts Research Division of Environment Canada, the Ecological Literacy and Sustainable Development Program of the Toronto District School Board and secondary school geography and biology teachers. Comments on the curriculum package are welcome. Please contact Brad Bass here with your comments or to book a workshop.

  1. Studying Climate Change, Health, and Adaptation: An introduction to climate change impacts, adaptation, complexity, and the COBWEB Simulation Platform
    • This document contains the first draft of the whole curriculum. It is divided into three sections: (1) introductory activities on climate change, health and systems science, (2) a workshop on climate change and health with COBWEB and (3) integrative activities to apply and reinforce the material. Download this file here.
  2. Curriculum Correlations
    • This table outlines the linkages between this material and Grade 10 Science, Grade 11 & 12 Geography and Grade 12 Biology. Download this file here.
  3. 6 x 6 grid Experiments
    • This is a very simple xml input file for COBWEB that illustrates all of the basic functions of the software, allowing the students to follow every agent in the environment while learning the software Download this file here.
  4. Heatwave and Aircond Experiments
    • These two xml input files are used in the workshop. They illustrate the impact of a heatwave on agent mortality and effect of creating air conditioned shelters as an adaptation. Download this file here (heatwave) and here (aircond).
  5. Generalist vs Specialist Experiments
    • These two xml input files illustrate how climate change can impact the survivability of generalists and specialists if they do not adapt their strategies. Download this file here (first) and here (second).
  6. Predator-Prey with and without a vector-borne disease Experiments
    • These two xml input files illustrate how a new vector-borne disease affects a predator-prey relationship. Download this file here (baseline) and here (disease).
  7. Disease & adaptation
  8. Mutation Rates
