Course Overview

It is often difficult for students to find research experience at the secondary and post secondary level. Many students are still looking for volunteer positions late into their undergraduate. The COBWEB Research Program is an opportunity to design your own individual research project. You will participate in lecture-based modules, quizzes and assignments throughout the duration of your research, having the option of working on your research either following our recommended guidelines or at your own pace to ensure flexibility for busier students!

Support for our researchers is available throughout the program, primarily in the form of TA mentorship sessions and online materials offering guidance throughout the research process in an area of their need or interest. Students in any science, social science or engineering discipline can participate. Whether you're interested in medicine, neuroscience, environmental science, physics, economics or the spread of disease, each and every idea has a place to be explored! COBWEB does NOT require any perquisite research, mathematical or computer science expertise.  Coding is also not required to develop a model.

Registering for this course enables students to receive mentorship and resources that lead to designing a research project, a COBWEB agent-based model, and present a scientific poster at our internal COBWEB conference!

Students will use the COBWEB simulation modelling software developed by our founder Dr. Brad Bass. COBWEB is an agent-based simulation model, meaning that the actions of each individual member of a population or component of a system can be represented in the model. Each member of the population can learn, and populations/systems can evolve novel strategies over time.
